Colic

baby-washingColic is the medical term for excessive, frequent crying in a baby caused my digestive discomfort.  It is a common condition affecting up to one in five babies. Colic usually begins within the first few weeks of life but often stops by the time the baby is four months old, and by six months at the latest.

In most cases, the intense crying occurs in the late afternoon or evening and usually lasts for several hours. You may also notice that your baby’s face becomes flushed, and they may clench their fists, draw their knees up to their tummy, or arch their back

Colic can cause enormous distress to babies and their parents. There are no safe conventional medicines available, so homeopathic medicines are a great idea.

Here are the top 3 homeopathic medicines to help ease their symptoms. Choose the one that best fits your child’s symptoms and give in a 30c as needed, up to 4 times a day. For babies crush one pillule between two spoons, add to a small amount of mineral or distilled water and give one teaspoon for a dose.  (If your child is under homeopathic treatment, please consult your homeopath before giving them a remedy). If you don’t see an improvement in 3 days, contact a classical homeopath who will treat your child with a constitutional remedy and will also be able to suggest changes to the mother’s diet.

  • Chamomilla is the most commonly used remedy for colic. Babies requiring chamomilla are very angry and very irritable. They often scream out with pain. They don’t know what they want for example one minute they may want their mother to hold them and the next writhe and push away. They can feel better with vigorous movement which is one of the only things that will pacify them. They experience bloating and wind directly after eating and will often wake during the night with a gurgling tummy and pain.
  • Colocynthis helps with intense colic in which the baby draws the legs up towards their chest or in older children who bend double with the pain. This colic is relieved by hot applications and sometimes is brought on by a fit of anger.
  • Mag Phos relieves babies who are irritable but not as angry as chamomilla babies. The pain feels better with gentle pressure, heat or warm applications or curling up.
